Motivation Is a Depreciating Asset

Why planning around how you'll feel is a design flaw, and what to build instead.

Motivation is real. It’s also unreliable, and it fades fastest when you need it most.

Most productivity advice quietly assumes you will feel like doing the work. When you don’t, the advice has nothing left to offer, and the blame lands on you.

The design flaw

A plan that depends on feeling ready will fail on tired days, busy days, and low days. Those aren’t rare exceptions. They are a large share of the calendar.

What to build instead

  • Lower the starting cost. Make the first step so small it needs almost no energy.
  • Remove decisions. Decide the when and where ahead of time so you only have to begin.
  • Plan for the dip. Assume your effort will drop, and decide in advance what the reduced version looks like.

The shift

Stop asking, “How do I stay motivated?” Start asking, “What would make this easy to start even if I don’t feel like it?”

That one question changes how you design everything that follows.

Build the system, not the streak.
